Booze, Bibles, & Bad Guys: Prohibition in the Country & Williams County

On January 17, 1920 the United States embarked on what was called ‘The Noble Experiment: the 18th Amendment effectively banned alcohol from national life. Through the next 13 years, the country was dry, at least in theory. Come to this program at the WCPL Local History Center to hear the story of how this event shaped the lives of Americans, and the citizens of Williams County. From radio evangelists and ‘do-gooder’ social reformers declaring a paradise on earth, the Mafia riding a wave of illegal booze to become a powerful force in America, to some local citizens caught in the grey area of illegality, the story of Prohibition reaches far beyond THE UNTOUCHABLES and the Roaring Twenties.

This is a FREE program for adults, and will be presented in the Harmon Room of the WCPL Local History Center, on Monday, February 24 at 6:30 pm. Registration is NOT required.

The Local History Center is located on the northeastern corner of High and Main Streets in Bryan, OhioFor more information, or to sign up for events that require registration, please call 833-633-READ x 275.
